Была попытка сделать из мобильных телефонов полноценную игровую платформу (N-Gage). С появлением таких операционных систем как Android и iOS, сервисов PlayMarket и AppStore ситуация резко изменилась в сторону проектов, заточенных на монетизацию и free-to-play модель, которую мы видим сейчас.
Я же хочу рассказать о тех играх и том временном промежутке, когда игры для мобильных телефонов распространялись хаотично и чуть ли не сарафанным радио, и — в основном — силами независимых и, естественно, пиратских ресурсов.
Если зайти на Википедию, там, конечно же, будет список игр на платформе J2ME, но эти тайтлы — либо нашумевшие проекты от крупных компаний (Gameloft, id Software, EA Mobile), либо совсем редкие исключения, которым повезло, хотя на самом деле «джава-игр» особенно в период с 2005 по 2009 выходило великое множество, и среди них были как и однозначные шедевры (Nowhere компании DeValley, трилогия Darkest Fear от Rovio Mobile, позднее — создателей Angry Birds, малоизвестная, но прекрасная Vampire’s Dawn: Deceit of Heretics Александра Коха (Alexander Koch), ради которой и возникло желание заняться данным циклом статей, так и многие другие), и менее однозначные, но всё ещё хорошие (Spiderwick Chronicles от всё той же DeValley, бюджетная, но добротная Elven Chronicles от Big Blue Bubble), так и откровенный проходняк, пусть и упорно создающий видимость чего-то достойного (как например та же Poetical от Digital-Red Mobile).

Сюжет простой: эльфийка-целительница спасает раненого воина, а потом предлагает ему спасти мир. Параллельно с общим масштабным сюжетом главный герой пытается разобраться в своём прошлом и в том, кто же стоял за нападением на караван, который он охранял в самом начале. Защищая караван, герой и получил тяжёлые ранения, от которых и лечила нашедшая его волшебница.
Геймплей: обычный jRPG.

Есть города, где можно покупать предметы и общаться с неигровыми персонажами. Некоторые из них предлагают дополнительные квесты, которые обычно сводятся или к убийству определённого количества монстров, или добыче лута из них.
Эта игра очень про гринд, вплоть до того, что уже первый основной квест — прокачать героя «хотя бы до восьмого уровня», после чего откроется проход в первый сложный данж, где вас ждёт босс.
Нелинейность здесь минимальная и определяется тем, выполняли ли вы сторонние квесты, или нет, и на финале это не скажется.
Какой либо вариативности в прокачке тоже не ждите: вещи в магазинах чем дороже, тем лучше. Но, даже так, под лейтплей уже придётся думать: чем дальше, тем выше цены, а разница в предлагаемых вещах — или бусты к разным видам атак — или, напротив, защита от разных стихий. А надевать на героя можно строго одно оружие, один вид брони (броня для воина, роба для волшебницы) и один элемент бижутерии.
Примитивно? Да, но тем и здорово: минимальный порог вхождения, максимальная отдача при условно-небольшом времени на общее прохождение (однако, если уж очень захотеть сделать из героев полубогов-нагибателей, там да, часов десять можно наиграть).
Что интересного:
Элемент тактики. Это всё ещё классическая пошаговая jRPG. У вас есть команда из двух бойцов, врагов на экране может быть до четырёх штук одновременно — уже как минимум выбор цели и грамотное распределение ролей.
Экран битвы перед выбором действия
Далее — шесть различных стихий: свет, тьма, огонь, молния, земля, лёд. И если ударить по врагу заклинанием или атакой, использующей его родную стихию, то вместо нанесения урона, вы его ещё и вылечите. И если поначалу любые сражения будут сводиться к тому, что вы перебираете все стихии подряд, пока не найдёте наиболее эффективную против данного монстра, то в дальнейшем уже привыкните, даже сможете угадывать её исходя из расцветки противника перед вами.
Противники здесь — отдельная тема. Во-первых, самих видов врагов не менее двух десятков плюс их цветовые вариации в зависимости от того, какую именно стихию они используют.
Во-вторых, сражение с ними происходит по сути в двух разных режимах — на карте мира, по которой вы перемещаетесь, и непосредственно на экране битвы.
Локация с монстрами, чей уровень и параметры значительно выше, чем у героя
Как это работает
Вы идёте по локации и видите летящий на вас вихрь (он может быть или зелёным, или синим, или жёлтым, или вовсе красным, в зависимости от степени опасности). Он может или именно что лететь в вашу сторону, или убегать от вас, или застыть в ожидании. Как вы уже догадались, именно в виде вихря вы видите абсолютно-любого монстра. А кто там именно — это вы уже узнаёте, столкнувшись с ним лицом к лицу.
На карте мира вы от этих вихрей можете убегать, или наоборот догонять их, аркада как есть, и, только коснувшись их — начинаете бой.
Ещё немного кадров локации, теперь — рядом с первым городом и монстрами, которые значительно слабее нас
Плюсы
- Большой сюжет на пять актов плюс целых два дополнения.
- Да, изначально простой, но чем дальше — тем более и более эпический и вполне на уровне young-adult книжецы сюжет.
- Пусть примитивная, но тактика, которая по-прежнему требует вовлечённости.
- Вариативность лута ближе к лейтплею.
- Ощущения действительного роста персонажа по мере прокачки: чем выше уровень, тем больше скиллов вам доступно, и тем более они различаются.
- Элемент аркадности с игрой в догонялки со слабыми и более сильными противниками.
- Наличие отдельного экрана карты всего мира с подсветкой вашей локации, чтоб не потерялись.
- Элемент бэктреккинга: некоторые события и места на ранних локациях открываются на более поздних этапах.

Минусы
- Гринд, гринд, гринд. Полное прохождение без шуток может занять до десяти часов реального времени, большую часть из которых вы проведёте в довольно-таки однообразных боях. Да, они сделаны увлекательно, да, там есть простор для тактики, а часть сражений — ещё и не всегда очевидные схватки с боссами. Но это всё ещё самый обычный гринд.
- Малая вариативность квестов. Почти все они сводятся или к убийству монстров, или к добыче лута из них, который, опять-таки, выбивается после убийства тушки.
- Фиксированный состав команды. Да, экипировать и Родана и Джеду вы можете как угодно. Да, они могут брать на себя разные роли. Но это всё ещё только воин Родан и волшебница Джеда. Других товарищей с вами не будет, несмотря на то, что именно неигровых персонажей тут для подобного проекта немало.

Наличие двух DLC.
С одной стороны — это круто, и их прохождение дополнит общую историю последним большим квестом и завершит общий сюжет ещё более эпическим финалом, чем это было в основной концовке.
С другой стороны, скачать их сейчас в наше время (если только речь не идёт об официальной версии игры для iOS, и то не факт) представляется крайне-сомнительным.
Но они есть, их целых два, и в своё время их можно было скачать прямо из меню игры через кнопку Downloads.
Итог
Хорошая, добротная игра.
Чувствуется, что маленький проект, сделанный явно для отчётности. На него едва ли возлагались большие амбиции. Но как минимум сценаристы и геймдизайнеры вложились на славу: получилось и бюджетно, и хорошо. К тому же, сейчас есть возможность ознакомиться с переизданием на iOS, а игра определённо того стоит.
